To complement the "Bank of China (Hong Kong) Presents: National Development and Achievements Series – Approaching Perfection: The Intersection of Sports and Science" exhibition, the Hong Kong Science Museum invites two sports science experts from the Research Institute for Sports Science and Technology of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to explain how to make effective use of performance running shoes to help with running training and prevent sports injuries, as well as how to apply biomechanical knowledge in swimming to improve performance.
Date: 10.1.2026 (Saturday)
Time: 2:30 – 4:30pm
Session 1: Running Shoe Functions and Healthy Running
This session explores how functional footwear can affect running biomechanics and its relation to running performance and injuries. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of the design intentions behind different types of functional running footwear and how to select suitable footwear for individual needs based on biomechanical considerations. The speaker will also discuss the implications of different running styles and running techniques on running performance and running related injuries.
Speaker: Dr. CHEUNG Tak-man, Jason (Principal Research Fellow, Research Institute for Sports Science and Technology, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University)
Session 2: Understanding Swimming Biomechanics
This session explores the fascinating science behind body movement in swimming. Participants will gain insights of swimming biomechanics, including how the body moves efficiently through water, the roles of propulsion and drag, and how technique, flexibility, and strength affect performance. The speaker will elaborate on the mechanics of different strokes, analyse common movement patterns, and discuss how biomechanical insights can improve training, prevent injuries, and enhance competitive performance.
Speaker: Dr. SO Chun-lung, Billy (Member, Research Institute for Sports Science and Technology, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University)
Language: Cantonese
Free admission on a first-come, first-served basis
